Measuring The Circumference Of The Upper Leg

Procedure

  • The patient lies relaxed on the examination table with extended hips and knees and the toes pointing upwards.
  • Determine a point 15 cm proximally from the lateral joint space of the knee.
  • If necessary, ask the patient to briefly bend the knee so that the lateral joint space can be sought.
  • Mark this point, if necessary.
  • Use a measuring tape to measure across the marked point perpendicular to the axis of the upper leg.
  • Note the circumference to an accuracy of 0.5 cm.
  • Compare the circumference of the left and the right leg.
