Measuring The Circumference Of The Lower Leg

Procedure

  • The patient sits on an examination table with the lower legs dangling and no weight bearing on the feet.
  • Measure a point 10 cm distally from the lateral joint space of the knee.
  • Mark this point, if necessary, with a pencil.
  • Then, using a measuring tape measure across the marked point perpendicular to the axis of the lower leg [Figure 142].
  • Note the circumference to the nearest 0.5 cm.
  • Compare the circumference of the left and the right leg.
  • If necessary, measure the circumference of the upper leg as well.
  • In that case, use a point 15 cm proximally from the lateral joint space.
