The Compression Bandage

The main aim of a compression bandage is to prevent swelling in the case of blunt injuries.

The compression bandage limits tissue elasticity and increases the pressure exerted by the tissue on the damaged blood vessels. If the tissue pressure is equal to or higher than the pressure in the blood vessels, blood will not flow from the blood vessels. If the swelling has already formed, the therapeutic value of a compression bandage is limited. The pressure exerted on the tissue causes any fluid that has leaked out to be reabsorbed into the blood and lymph vessels.

A compression bandage exerts circular and evenly-distributed pressure on the affected body part. The tissue should be pressed against the underlying bone at all sides.
