Ankle Pressure Bandage

Material

  • Pressure distributing layer (padding): 1-2 rolls of non-absorbent wadding or 1-2 rolls of synthetic wadding, 6-10 cm wide.
  • Fixing layer: 2 cambric cotton bandage rolls, 6-8 cm wide.

Procedure

  • Position the ankle at a 90° angle.
  • Apply the padding using spiral turns from the toes up to about 10 cm above the malleolus.
  • Cover the foot and the ankle with at least one layer.
  • Place some additional padding between the malleolus and the Achilles tendon.
  • Fix the padding tightly, ensuring even pressure across the foot and the ankle.
  • Use a combination of the bandaging techniques for the mid-foot/ankle and the heel.
  • Start applying the roller bandage using the mid-foot/ankle technique.
  • Apply two circular turns around the forefoot.
  • Leave 1 cm of the padding uncovered along the toes.
  • Apply a few spiral turns around the forefoot and the mid-foot.
  • Now use the heel bandaging technique.
  • Apply the bandage from the dorsum of the foot across the middle of the heel, making two circular turns [Figure 89].

Figure 89

  • Continue with figures-of-eight according to the heel bandaging technique, until the area between the heel and mid-foot is fully covered.
  • Continue using the mid-foot/heel bandaging technique.
  • Apply a number of figure-of-eight turns between the mid-foot and the ankle according to the mid-foot/ankle bandaging technique [Figure 90].

Figure 90

  • Cover the padding around the lower leg using spiral turns.
  • Finish the bandaging with two circular turns around the lower leg.
  • Leave 1 cm of the padding layer uncovered all round.
  • After a few minutes, check the peripheral blood flow for signs of vascular congestion, particularly in the toes [Figure 91].
