The Preventive Ankle Support

For both the left and the right ankle, the first turn is applied to the heel in a lateral to medial direction.

Material

  • Ideal bandage, 8 cm wide, low elasticity.

Procedure

  • Indicate the correct angle for the ankle (90° flexion, in slight eversion) and ask the patient to keep the foot in this position.
  • Start the first turn on the lateral side of the heel, using a circular technique.
  • Fix the first turn with a second circular turn [Figure 92].

  • Apply a third turn in an upwards direction, around the bottom of the ankle [Figures 92, 93].

  • Apply the fourth turn, returning from the Achilles tendon and lateral part of the ankle, in a circular movement around the forefoot [Figures 93, 94].

  • Apply the fifth turn, departing from the lateral edge of the foot [Figure 95], across the top of the foot, past the medial malleolus and Achilles tendon, until you return to the lateral side of the heel [Figure 96].

  • Pass the sixth turn (the first heel turn) under the heel and back across the front of the ankle, until you return to the lateral malleolus [Figures 96, 97].

  • Pass the seventh turn (second heel turn) across the medial side of the heel and bring it straight back to the lateral side by passing underneath the heel [Figures 97, 98].

  • Apply a circular eighth turn around the forefoot to fix the two heel turns.
  • The bandage will be on the lateral side again [Figures 99, 100].

  • Apply a few more figure-of-eight turns around the ankle [Figures 100, 101].

  • Finish the bandage with a few circular turns around the bottom of the ankle [Figure 102].

  • Fix the end of the bandage with a piece of tape [Figure 103].
