Bandaging Technique – Forefoot

Material

Roller bandage:

  • For a child: 4-6 cm wide.
  • For an adult: 6-8 cm wide.

Procedure

  • Place the bandage across the sole of the foot [Figure 37].

Figure 37

  • Pass the bandage across the toes to the instep using a recurrent turn.
  • Use your thumb and index finger to hold the bandage on the mid-foot [Figure 38].

Figure 38

  • Make a number of recurrent turns between the instep and the sole of the foot.
  • Fully cover the row of toes by placing the bandage alternately more towards the big toe and then towards the little toe.
  • On the last recurrent turn, the middle of the bandage should pass across the middle toe [Figure 39].

Figure 39

  • From the sole of the foot, turn the bandage towards the outside of the big or little toe [Figure 40].

Figure 40

  • Make a circular turn across the proximal toe phalanges.
  • Ensure that the edges of the recurrent turns are fully covered by the circular turn [Figure 41].

Figure 41

  • Apply spiral turns in a distal to proximal direction around the forefoot and mid-foot, until the recurrent turns have been fully covered [Figure 42].

Figure 42

  • Make a number of Figure-of-eight turns between the mid-foot and the ankle [Figure 43].

Figure 43

  • Finish the bandaging with a circular turn around the ankle and fix the end of the bandage to this turn.

The roller bandage on the forefoot has been correctly applied if:

  • The heel is uncovered.
  • The turns between the ankle and mid-foot cross at the instep [Figure 44].
