Qpercom Proctoring/Invigilation and Safe Exam Browser Guide

Welcome to the Qpercom Assessment Platform! Ensuring the integrity and security of remote and virtual assessments is a critical priority.

As an administrator, Qpercom provides you with a robust suite of proctoring and invigilation options that can be used individually or in combination to suit your specific assessment requirements. This comprehensive guide will walk you through live monitoring, second camera setups, and the complete installation process for the Safe Exam Browser.

1. Live Proctoring & Record and Review

Monitoring candidates during an assessment is straightforward with Qpercom’s built-in tools.

  • Live Proctoring: By enabling the Is Live Proctoring setting, your administration team can view live video feeds of all activity across the assessment circuit. Participants will be made aware that they are being monitored by a blue “MON” icon at the top of their screens. Administrators can toggle this live feed on and off directly from the Event Monitoring screen.
  • Record & Review: You can choose to record individual station rooms or ad-hoc briefing rooms for later review. Simply click Record for the desired room, and a red recording icon will display for participants. When finished, click Stop Recording. All recordings are securely stored in the Media Centre for you to download and review after the fact.

2. Second Camera Proctoring

For assessments that require a 360-degree view of a candidate’s environment or a view of their screen, you can enable Second Camera Proctoring.

  • How it works: Candidates will be presented with a QR code on their screen. By scanning this code with their smartphone, they activate a secondary camera feed alongside their main device.
  • Configuration: Administrators can instruct candidates on exactly where to place their smartphone to ensure the best viewing angle.
  • Recording: If the Record & Review function is enabled while the second camera is active, both the main feed and the secondary camera feed will be recorded and saved to the Media Centre.

3. Introduction to the Safe Exam Browser (SEB)

For high-stakes assessments, Qpercom integrates with the Safe Exam Browser (SEB), a custom web browser environment designed by the SEB Alliance to prevent fraud in online examinations.

  • Device Lockdown: SEB turns any computer into a secure workstation by preventing access to system functions, other websites, files, and third-party applications. It blocks candidates from taking screenshots, copying, pasting, or printing during the exam.
  • Enabling SEB: Administrators can turn this on by checking the Candidate Safe Exam Browser setting within the assessment event settings.
  • Candidate Experience: Candidates will be informed during their Virtual Compatibility Check that SEB is required. They will be guided to download both the SEB software and a specific Qpercom Configuration file (.seb file) to their device.

4. Installing Safe Exam Browser: Windows OS

SEB is supported on laptops and desktop PCs running Windows 11 or higher.

  1. Download: Candidates must download the latest Windows version of SEB from the official SEB download page.
  2. Install: Run the downloaded .exe file (e.g., SafeExamBrowserInstaller.exe). Agree to the license terms and click Install. When prompted by the User Account Control, click Yes to allow the app to make changes to the device.
  3. Launch the Exam: To begin the assessment, candidates must locate the specific Qpercom Configuration file (.seb file) they downloaded during the diagnostic check and double-click it. This launches SEB in exam mode and takes them to the Qpercom login page.
  4. Closing SEB: Once the assessment is finished and the candidate has safely logged out of Qpercom, they can exit SEB by clicking the power icon in the bottom corner of the screen.

5. Installing Safe Exam Browser: MacOS

SEB is supported on MacBooks and Mac desktops running MacOS 14 or higher.

  1. Download: Candidates must download the latest Mac version of SEB from the official SEB download page.
  2. Install: Double-click the downloaded .dmg file to mount it. Drag the Safe Exam Browser icon into the Applications folder.
  3. Grant Permissions: This is a crucial step. Candidates must grant SEB access to their Documents and Downloads folders. If they accidentally click “Don’t Allow,” they must go to Apple Settings > Privacy & Security > Files and Folders, locate Safe Exam Browser, and manually toggle the permissions on.
  4. Launch the Exam: To begin, candidates must double-click the Qpercom Configuration file (.seb file) to open SEB in exam mode.
  5. Closing SEB: After logging out of Qpercom, candidates can quit SEB by clicking the power icon in the bottom corner of the screen.

6. Installing Safe Exam Browser: iOS (iPads)

SEB is supported on iPads running iOS 16 or higher. Note: If a smartphone is being used strictly as a Second Camera, SEB does not need to be installed on that secondary device.

  1. Download: Candidates must download the “SafeExamBrowser” app directly from the Apple App Store. They will need their Apple ID password to complete this.
  2. Grant Permissions: After opening the app, candidates will be prompted by the system to grant permissions. They must tap OK and Allow for both the Camera and the Microphone to be used during the assessment.
  3. Launch the Exam: Candidates must open their iPad’s Files app, locate the downloaded Qpercom Configuration file (.seb file), and tap it to launch SEB in secure exam mode.
  4. Closing SEB: After completing the exam and logging out, candidates can exit the secure browser by tapping the power icon in the bottom corner of the screen.

Ensuring a Secure Assessment Environment

It is highly recommended that you instruct candidates to run their Virtual Compatibility Check and install Safe Exam Browser well in advance of the assessment day to resolve any technical issues before the exam begins.
