The wish/thought of ending one’s life.
We distinguish between:
- Detailed Plans: There are detailed thoughts or plans to end one’s life.
- No Detailed Plans: Death is perceived as a solution, but there are no plans or specific actions to end life.
Suicidality should always be explored. The idea that health professionals may set the stage for an actual suicide by asking suicidal person’s about it, has been ruled out. On the contrary, exploring suicidal ideation often provides an opening to discuss current problems, which some people consider a relief. Suicidality is common in many psychiatric disorders, including depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, substance abuse and schizophrenia.
