Reporting of the mental status examination holds the advantages of a systematic examination. The mental status of a patient is dynamic and may change over time, and is therefore, a description of the state at the time of the examination. The mental status examination is presented in terms of first impressions and is structured in terms of cognitive, affective and conative domains.
