Pericardial rub

This is a rubbing sound, comparable to the crisp sound of footsteps in the snow and which occurs in the case of pericarditis (inflammation of the heart sac).
The sound is caused by the damaged pericardial layers sliding over each other. It can be heard in both systole and diastole, usually best in the left parasternal 4th/5th intercostal space.
