Mayer’s reflex (superficial)

The median nerve acts as both the afferent and the efferent pathway, and the spinal root is C5-6.

  • Use one hand to hold the patient’s forearm [Figure 84].
  • Have the patient relax the wrist in palmar flexion.
  • Use your other hand to gently bring the patient’s middle finger into maximum flexion.
  • Look for a grasping movement by the index finger and thumb (towards one another).

The same reflex can also be evoked in the following way:

  • The patient places their hands on the table, relaxed and with the palms facing upwards.
  • Place your finger against the terminal phalanges of fingers II-V, which should remain lightly flexed.
  • Strike your own finger with the reflex hammer.
  • Note any flexion in the fingers, including the thumb.This is also known as the finger flexion reflex.
