An impression of the patient’s voice, speech and language use can be obtained during the history-taking.
By ‘voice’ we mean the tones formed by the vibrations of the vocal cords.
‘Speech’ refers to the way in which movements of the lips, tongue and roof of the mouth transform the tones to sounds and words.
‘Use of language’ describes the way in which the patient uses the words as symbols.
