Feelings & Reaction Induced In The Physician

It is important to reflect on what feelings and reactions a patient awakes in you. They may have a negative connotation and may hamper the execution of the psychiatric interview. On the other hand, your feelings and reactions may have diagnostic significance, since they are a direct indication of the presence of psychopathology in the patient. These feelings and reactions should always be explored.

Consider a patient who not only irritates you, but several people around him.

This is an example indicative of personality pathology (narcissism or borderline personality disorder), but also of a dysphoric mania or a behaviour disorder resulting from a frontal syndrome. Then again, you may find yourself getting more energetic and happy in the presence of a patient with a euphoric mania, or on the contrary, slower and a little gloomier in the presence of a patient with a depressive disorder.
