Dysfunctions in attention become apparent when a patient has trouble focusing on new stimuli (does not respond/responds slowly/brief answers to questions). On the other hand, they can also respond quickly to new stimuli (increased distraction). With increased distraction, attracting attention is easy, sustaining it is difficult. This is indicative of a mania. Not being able to sustain attention, or a delayed response, may be indicative of an anxiety disorder, a depressive disorder, schizophrenia, or of cognitive disorders.
