Procedure
- The patient lies relaxed on the examination table in supine position, with extended hips and knees and the toes ‘pointing’ ventrally.
- Determine a point 15 cm proximally from the lateral joint space of the knee [Figure 46].
- If necessary, ask the patient to briefly bend the knee so that the lateral joint space can be located.

- If necessary, mark this position with a pencil.
- Using flexible measuring tape, measure across the marked point perpendicular to the axis of the upper leg.
- Note the circumference to the nearest 0.5 cm.
- Compare the size of the left leg with that of the right leg.
