Brachioradialis reflex (deep tendon)

The radial nerve is the afferent pathway and the median nerve is the efferent pathway. The spinal root is C5-6.

The sitting patient

  • Starting position, refer to BTR.
  • Use the reflex hammer to strike about 1 cm above the radial styloid process [Figure 81].
  • Note the contraction of the brachioradialis muscle and the movement of the forearm.

The supine patient

  • The patient’s forearm should be supported by the underlying surface.
  • Take hold of the patient’s index finger (and middle finger) in one hand and shake the patient’s forearm and wrist until these are relaxed.
  • Use the reflex hammer to strike about 1 cm above the radial styloid process [82].
  • Note the contraction of the brachioradialis muscle and the movement of the forearm.
