Measurement The Circumference Of The Upper Arm


Procedure

  • The patient should be seated comfortably with their lower arms supported and their arms bent (90° flexion at the elbows).
  • Determine a point 10 cm proximally from the lateral epicondyle.
  • If necessary, mark this point with a pencil.
  • Using a measuring tape, measure perpendicular to the axis of the upper arm across the marked point [Figure 62].

  • Note the circumference to the nearest 0.5 cm.
  • Compare the circumference of the left and right arm (bear in mind the patient’s dominant hand).
