Tests When Suspecting A Difference In Leg Length


These tests are indicated in:

  • Confirmed pelvic tilting (with functional scoliosis) and/or abnormal knee and/or natal cleft height on inspection.

General Impression of the Length of the Legs


Procedure

  • The patient lies in supine position on the examination table with hips and knees in 90° flexion, during which the examiner supports the lower legs and is standing on the side or at the end of the examination table [Figure 49].

Pay attention to:

  • A possible difference in knee height (at the level of the patella).

Interpretation:

A difference in knee height indicates a difference in length of the upper legs.

  • Subsequently, allow the patient to lie in a prone position with both knees in 90° flexion. The examiner stands on the side or at the foot end of the table [Figure 50].

Pay attention to:

  • A possible difference in foot sole height.

Interpretation

A difference in foot sole height indicates a difference in length of the lower legs.
