The mastoid process is slightly elevated behind the auricle. Within it, there are mastoid air cells that are connected with the middle ear. They can contribute to inflammatory processes of the middle ear.
- During inspection, you should assess the colour of the covering skin.
- Redness may indicate inflammation of the skin itself or of the mastoid process beneath the skin.
- Palpate the mastoid process.
- Note the presence of any swelling, and if present, assess whether this is free or attached to the underlying tissue.
- Temperature is also a focal point, as is tenderness upon palpation.
