Palpation of the veins

Procedure

  • continually compare left and right
  • if venous insufficiency (varicose veins) is suspected then examine the patient in a standing position
  • if venous thrombosis is suspected then examine the patient in the lying position with the knee slightly bent.

During this, take note of:

  • local tenderness
  • the condition of the vessel wall and any valves present
  • the size of the muscles and muscle tone
  • perivenous abnormalities such as swelling, oedema, inflammation warmth and
