Other Pulsations


Palpation for other pulsations should be carried out by placing the flat of the hand over the precordium. The location may indicate the point at which these arise (atria or large vessels).

Besides the presence of other pulsations, the presence of ‘thrills‘ is noted. These thrills are tremors over the heart that translocate due to a more rapid blood flow through a stenotic valve. For example, a diastolic thrill in the case of mitral stenosis or a systolic thrill in the case of a ventricular septal defect.
