Wounds containing dirt, rust, or other foreign objects must be washed clean with NaCl 0.9%. This will wash away dirt particles.
Heavily contaminated wounds may require an antibacterial rinsing solution, such as chlorhexidine solution in water 1:1000. However, all disinfecting solutions are associated with toxic tissue effects. Therefore, NaCl 0.9% is preferred.
