Introduction

During the gynaecological examination the investigator intrudes on the patient’s personal intimacy more than with any other physical diagnostic examination. Consequently, not only does a command of the examination techniques and skills play a role, but attitude, communication skills and attentiveness are also important.
In this program the basic gynaecological examination is discussed. It has been decided to discuss the necessary skills, based on the practical setting. These will first be discussed briefly and systematically, and then put into context utilising various case scenario’s. In this manner, one learns to consciously implement (parts of) the gynaecological examination as a tool to obtain more information for solving a problem. The included video-clips show demonstations of the examination.
The sections cover the conditions and requirements for the examination, as well as the history-taking, followed by a discussion of the skills.
The reader is requested to self-study with regards to anatomy, (patho)physiology and pathology as preparation for training or when learning gynaecological skills, including further subject areas you may come across that require more detailed study.
