Procedure
- continually compare left and right
- if venous insufficiency (varicose veins) is suspected then examine the patient in a standing position
- if venous thrombosis is suspected then examine the patient in the lying position with the knee slightly bent.
During this, take note of:
- local tenderness
- the condition of the vessel wall and any valves present
- the size of the muscles and muscle tone
- perivenous abnormalities such as swelling, oedema, inflammation warmth and
