- Do you have (or have you had) a swelling in the groin? On which side? How did it feel? How long did it last? Was it accompanied by other symptoms (e.g. pain, fever, skin disorders, radiating pain)?
Inguinal hernias variably cause swelling. Pain suggests entrapment, ischaemia, or necrosis. Other causes may be lymph nodes, aneurysms, and, in young infants, an undescended testis.
