The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">history-taking<\/span> and a systematic and technically well-executed <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">physical examination<\/span> of the breasts and associated lymph nodes form the first steps to establishing a diagnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Breast examination is indicated:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">In the case of a (<em>suspected<\/em>) <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>pathological growth<\/strong><\/span> in, or associated with, the breast.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If there are <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>breast-related symptoms<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">As part of a routine (<em>gynaecological<\/em>) examination, for example during <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>pregnancy<\/strong><\/span> or when giving instructions for <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>self-examination<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">All women should be made aware of the importance of <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>regular self-examination<\/strong><\/span> of their breasts. Prior to the menopause, it is best to carry this out at the same point during the cycle, preferably during the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>pre-ovulatory phase<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The breast examination consists of <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>inspection<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>palpation<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>examination of the axillae<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumour in women.\u00a0Most tumours are discovered by the women themselves.
