These sounds are caused by <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>resonance<\/strong><\/span> in the bronchial system during breathing and are audible during both inspiration and expiration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">During auscultation the following has to be assessed:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The breath sounds, in terms of:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Character<\/strong><\/span> (<em>frequency and sharpness<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Intensity<\/strong><\/span> of inspiration and expiration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Ratio<\/strong><\/span> of inspiration time and expiration time.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The presence of <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>adventitious sounds<\/strong><\/span>, always indicative of pathology.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">And, if indicated, <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>bronchophony<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During deep inspiration and expiration with the mouth open, we can assess the breath sounds using auscultation.
