Anatomical and Physiological Background Knowledge<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

The left heart pumps oxygen-rich blood<\/strong><\/span> under relatively high pressure via the arterial system<\/strong><\/span> to the peripheral tissues<\/strong><\/span>. After the tissues have extracted the necessary nutrients and oxygen from the blood and excreted waste substances into the blood, the oxygen-poor blood<\/strong><\/span> is then returned under relatively low pressure via the venous vascular system<\/strong><\/span> to the right heart<\/strong><\/span>. Then the blood is once again enriched with oxygen in the lungs.<\/span><\/p>\n

In vivo, part of the venous system is visible as filled or unfilled blue veins under the skin. No pulsations are felt if the venous system is palpated.<\/span><\/p>\n

The arterial system is not normally visible. The arterial system can usually be examined by means of palpation<\/strong><\/span>, during which pulsations can be determined.<\/span><\/p>\n

Besides local information about the vascular system, an examination of the arterial system mainly provides information about the pumping function<\/strong><\/span> of the heart. An examination of the venous system mainly provides information about the volume status<\/strong><\/span> of the entire circulatory system.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Aim<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

The aim is to gain an impression of the blood supply<\/strong><\/span> and venous drainage<\/strong><\/span> of the soft tissues, the condition<\/strong><\/span> of the arterial<\/strong><\/span> and venous blood vessels<\/strong><\/span>, the heart\u2019s pump function<\/strong><\/span> and the patient\u2019s vascular volume status<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Conditions<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

With respect to the patient:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Sufficiently informed.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Sufficiently undressed.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Upper extremities – upper body exposed (bra does not need to be removed<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Abdominal region and lower limbs – stomach and legs exposed (underwear does not need to be removed<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Good position.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Upper extremities – sitting.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Abdomen\/lower extremities – lying and standing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    With respect to the examiner:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Warm, clean hands.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Warm, clean instruments.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n

      With respect to the examination room:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      • Clean.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Properly heated.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Adequate lighting.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Low noise level.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
