select the appropriate width, depending on the size of the arm; remove the plaster rolls from the packaging.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Bandage scissors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Sling or collar\u2019n\u2019cuff.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/125229743?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"384\" height=\"288\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Procedure<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Fill a small bucket with lukewarm water (<em>around 20\u00b0 C<\/em>) and place this as close to the treatment table as possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Ask the patient to sit at the treatment table with the arm in the position in which it is to be immobilised. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>elbow<\/strong><\/span> should be at a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>90\u00b0 angle<\/strong><\/span>, the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>wrist<\/strong><\/span> should be in <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>slight dorsal flexion<\/strong><\/span> and the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>forearm<\/strong><\/span> in <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>neutral rotation<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Determine the required length of stockinette (<em>about 1.5 x the length of the actual plaster bandage<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Slide the stockinette over the arm; cut a hole for the thumb beforehand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Place a layer of <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>padding<\/strong><\/span> all around, putting an additional layer on pressure-sensitive points. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Cut a hole for the thumb<em><strong> [Figure 124]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; display: block;\">Figure 124<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Cut out a triangle in the plaster bandage for the thumb.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Submerge the roll of plaster under water until no more air bubbles are released. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If the plaster bandage is held under water at an angle, a few seconds will be sufficient <em><strong>[Figure 125]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; display: block;\">Figure 125<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Remove the plaster roll from the water and gently squeeze out any excess water.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Apply the plaster bandage in a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>circular fashion<\/strong><\/span>, working in a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>distal<\/strong><\/span> to <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>proximal direction<\/strong><\/span>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Distribute the pressure to avoid causing <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>vascular congestion<\/strong><\/span>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The dorsal side of the metacarpal joints should remain uncovered, while on the volar side the plaster should not reach beyond the distal horizontal palmar crease<em><strong> [Figure 126]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; display: block;\">Figure 126<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Fold the stockinette over at both ends.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Mould the plaster, with the elbow in 90\u00b0 flexion and in a neutral position between pronation and supination. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The wrist should be held in about <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>15\u00b0 dorsal flexion<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Avoid making indentations with your fingers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Apply the next roll of plaster, entirely covering the folded over stockinette <em><strong>[Figure 127]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; display: block;\">Figure 128<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Inform the patient that heat will be given off during the hardening process.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Once the plaster cast has hardened, apply a sling or collar\u2019n\u2019cuff.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Tell the patient that it will be at least another 24 hours before the plaster is hard enough to take a knock.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Ask the patient to inform you immediately if the fingers on the immobilised arm turn blue or pale.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Instruct the patient to regularly move their fingers <em><strong>[Figure 129]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block;
