{"id":908,"date":"2010-12-02T18:18:26","date_gmt":"2010-12-02T18:18:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/the-wound-compression-bandage\/"},"modified":"2024-04-12T10:40:06","modified_gmt":"2024-04-12T09:40:06","slug":"the-wound-compression-bandage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/index.php\/bandages-and-bandaging-techniques\/the-wound-compression-bandage\/the-wound-compression-bandage\/","title":{"rendered":"The Wound Compression Bandage"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">A <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>wound compression bandage<\/strong><\/span> consists of bandaging material which <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>exerts pressure<\/strong><\/span> inside the wound to control bleeding from a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>damaged blood vessel<\/strong><\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">hard object<\/span>, about the size of the wound, is pressed into the wound using <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>non-elastic<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>high tensile strength roller bandaging<\/strong><\/span>. Circular turns are used to apply the bandage with force around the object and the part of the body. These turns around the wound should be alternated with circular turns that pass <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">proximally<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">distally<\/span> to the wound. These proximal and distal turns should cover half the width of those layers above the site of the wound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">By only tightening the bandage when it passes over the wound, the greatest pressure will be over the wound. The pressure should decrease towards the edge of the bandage, so that the bandage does not cut into the skin.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Materials<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The wound compression bandage should consist of the following layers:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>A wound dressing layer:<\/strong><\/span> Sterile absorbent gauze, emergency bandage or an absorbent wound dressing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Absorbent layer<\/strong><\/span>: White cotton wool wadding or cellulose. This is not necessary if an emergency bandage or absorbent wound dressing layer is used.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Compression layer:<\/strong><\/span> Small hard object, such as a roll of bandage, a small stone or non-absorbent cotton wool.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Fixing layer:<\/strong><\/span> Non-elastic bandage, preferably cambric, 6 cm wide.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Procedure<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Cover the wound with the dressing material.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If possible, place the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>absorbent layer<\/strong><\/span> on top of the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>dressing layer<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Place the hard object precisely above the wound. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Fold up non-absorbent cotton wool or a handkerchief to form a small plug <em><strong>[Figure 80]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; display: block;\">Figure 80<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Fix the bandage layers by applying the bandage with two circular turns around the body part at the site of the wound<em><strong> [Figure 81]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; display: block;\">Figure 82<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Make one circular turn distal to the wound site, but ensure that the turn covers half the width of the previous three circular turns <em><strong>[Figure 83]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; display: block;\">Figure 83<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Apply a tight circular turn over the wound.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Subsequently make one circular turn proximal to the wound site, ensuring that this covers half the width of the circular turns that pass over the wound <\/span><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em><strong>[Figure 84]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; display: block;\">Figure 84<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Repeat these circular turns across and next to the wound a number of times. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Between each proximal and distal turn, make one circular turn across the wound. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Only pull the bandage tight for the turn that passes over the wound, so that the pressure is greatest on the wound and decreases towards the edges of the bandage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Finish the bandage with a circular turn over the wound <em><strong>[Figure 85]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block;
