Bandages can be divided into four groups<\/strong><\/span>, according to what they are used for.<\/span><\/p>\n Wound Dressing<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n This is used in the case of an (imminent<\/em>) external wound<\/strong><\/span> to prevent contamination<\/span> of the wound or the surrounding area.<\/span><\/p>\n The dressing comprises three layers [Figure 1]<\/strong><\/em>:<\/span><\/p>\n The technique for applying a wound dressing is described in the section “Wound Dressings<\/em>.”<\/span><\/p>\n Compression Dressing<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n This is a variant of the wound dressing [Figure 2]<\/strong><\/em>. It is used for external wounds<\/strong><\/span> with arterial<\/strong><\/span> or venous bleeding<\/strong><\/span>. An object the size of the wound (C<\/em>) is placed on top of the layer in contact with the wound (A<\/em>) and the absorbent layer (B<\/em>). The dressing material is fixed using a roller bandage<\/strong><\/span> (D<\/em>) and the object (C<\/em>) is pressed against the wound. By applying pressure in this way, bleeding is more likely to stop. The application is described in “The Wound Compression Bandage<\/em>.”<\/span><\/p>\n Compression Bandaging<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This bandaging is used for internal wounds<\/strong><\/span> to prevent<\/span> or limit swelling<\/span> as the result of bleeding [Figure 3]<\/strong><\/em>. By tightly applying a roller bandage (B<\/em>) around the body part involved, circular pressure is exerted. To ensure that the pressure is evenly distributed, a pressure-distributing layer<\/strong><\/span> (A<\/em>) is placed between the skin and the bandage (B<\/em>). The application is described in “The Compression Bandage<\/em>.”<\/span><\/p>\n Support and Immobilising Bandages<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Wound healing<\/strong><\/span> is promoted by providing support<\/span> and limiting<\/span> or preventing movement<\/span> of the body part involved.<\/span><\/p>\n A commonly-used support bandage for upper extremities<\/span> is the sling<\/strong><\/span>. The forearm<\/span> is supported in a triangular cloth<\/strong><\/span>. The Collar\u2019n\u2019Cuff<\/strong><\/span>, a stockinette<\/strong><\/span> with a pressure-distributing filling<\/span> has a comparable function to the sling, but is more comfortable<\/span> around the neck. <\/span><\/p>\n A plaster cast<\/strong><\/span> is a form of supportive bandage<\/span> which more or less fully immobilises<\/span> part of the body. Bandages are meant to support proprioception (or its temporary loss<\/em>) and control activity by preventing any extreme movements. <\/span><\/p>\n Support bandages<\/strong><\/span> can also be used to prevent injury<\/span>. One example is a preventative bandage<\/strong><\/span>, as well as the pressure gradient bandage<\/strong><\/span> used for venous insufficiency<\/span> in lower extremities<\/span>. Weakening of the connective and muscle tissue leads to a reduction in venous support and pump function, resulting in congestion<\/strong><\/span> in the vascular system<\/strong> <\/span>of the lower legs. The use of a support bandage, in the form of an elastic stocking<\/strong><\/span> or bandage wraps<\/strong><\/span>, where the pressure decreases in the distal to proximal direction, stimulates venous return and prevents ulcer formation.
