Abscess Incision and Drainage of Small Abscesses Lying Very Close to the Surface<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

Material<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n
    \n
  • Blade handle with blade no. 10.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Materials for collecting material for pus culture.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Disinfectants.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Ethyl chloride spray or lidocaine for intracutaneous injection.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Drain.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
    \n

    Procedure<\/span><\/h3>\n
      \n
    • Disinfect<\/strong><\/span> the skin above and around the abscess.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Cover the area with a sterile drape<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Administer local anaesthesia<\/strong><\/span> using ethyl chloride spray or infiltrate<\/strong><\/span> the area above the fluctuation using a very fine needle intracutaneously (infiltration anaesthesia is preferred over freezing<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Make an incision<\/strong><\/span> above the fluctuation. Do not \u201cstab in the dark<\/em>,\u201d but cut where you can see. Open the abscess widely (\u201csmall surgeons make small incisions<\/em>\u201d).<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Collect material<\/strong><\/span> for culture using a cotton swab.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Clean the abscess cavity with dry<\/strong><\/span>, sterile gauze<\/strong><\/span> or rinse with NaCl<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Insert a drain<\/strong><\/span> or the tip of an unfolded piece of gauze<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Apply an absorbing bandage<\/strong><\/span> which will allow air to pass through.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Have the patient rest<\/strong><\/span> the affected body part or wear a sling<\/strong><\/span> if it involves the upper extremities.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Check the wound daily<\/strong><\/span> and remove the drain after 2 days, if it hasn\u2019t fallen out spontaneously.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
