The cause is often <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>trauma<\/strong><\/span> due to incorrect nail care, whereby the corners of the nail are cut <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">too short<\/span>, or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">local pressure<\/span> caused by tight footwear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Hyperhidrosis<\/strong><\/span> can also influence the development of ingrown toenails. The inflammatory reaction occurs when the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">sharp edge<\/span> of the nail grows into the skin. Subsequently, a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>granuloma<\/strong><\/span> often forms.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">There are three stages:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Redness with a painful nail edge (<em>paronychia<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Presence of pus under the nail.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Granulation tissue in the nail wall (<em>granuloma<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The vast range of therapeutic options and variety in wedge excisions would suggest that an equally high incidence of suboptimal results and recurrences are seen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Treatment options for ingrown toenail include the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>Stage 1<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Treat paronychia conservatively with soda baths.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Reduce the pressure on the nail by filing a groove in the curve of the nail.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Continue this for three months.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>Stage 2<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Nail extraction and, at a later stage, wedge excision.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Partial nail extraction followed by dabbing with phenol 80% in water and rinsing with alcohol 70%. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Phenol treatment is contra-indicated in patients with poor peripheral circulation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>Stage 3 <\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Partial nail extraction followed by dabbing with phenol 80% in water and rinsing with alcohol 70%.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Wedge excision.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ingrown toenails usually affect the big toe and most commonly occur in people in their 30s.
