If wounded later in life, the treating physician is required to ask about tetanus immunisation injections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Tetanus prophylaxis is indicated for every non-surgical wound that occurs under non-sterile conditions. The immunisation history of the patient determines whether the patient is actively and\/or passively immunised against tetanus completely. We recognise three categories of immunisation status. <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Complete immunisation<\/strong><\/span> refers to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">active immunisation<\/span> with tetanus toxoid, administered three times with a period of one month between the first and second injections and six months between the second and third injections. Patients who receive a prophylactic \u201c<em>booster<\/em>\u201d injection of tetanus toxoid (<em>category II<\/em>) maintain basic immunity for 20 years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Having tetanus does not provide immunity. The highly toxic tetanus toxin is present in quantities too small to invoke an antigenic response. Immunity to tetanus can only be achieved through active and\/or passive immunisation.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">1.\u00a0 Non-vaccinated patients:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Immediately after trauma:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">1 ampoule human tetanus immunoglobulin + first vaccination with tetanus toxoid.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Repeat vaccination 1 and 6 months after the first vaccination.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">2.\u00a0 Incompletely vaccinated patients:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Immediately after trauma:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">1 ampoule human tetanus immunoglobulin.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Complete vaccination schedule.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">3.\u00a0 Patients who were likely vaccinated more than 20 years ago:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Immediately after trauma:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">1 dose tetanus vaccine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Men born before 1936 and women born before 1950: 1 dose human tetanus immunoglobulin.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">4.\u00a0 Completely vaccinated patients vaccinated more than 10 years ago:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Immediately after trauma:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">1 dose vaccine.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">5.\u00a0 HIV positive or otherwise immunocompromised patients:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Treat as non-vaccinated patients.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The vaccination programme for newborns, young children, and school-aged children includes active immunisation for tetanus using the tetanus phosphate toxoid.
