Because thin nerve fibres are blocked before thick nerve fibres, impairment of stimulus conduction occurs in the following sequence: <strong>pain &#8211; cold &#8211; heat &#8211; contact- pressure- motor<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Methods<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Freezing the skin with <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>ethyl chloride spray<\/strong><\/span>. The technique is described in the section &#8220;<em>Skills<\/em>.&#8221; Used for incisions of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">superficial abscesses<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Surface anaesthesia<\/strong><\/span> of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mucous membranes<\/span> using <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>drops<\/strong><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>sprays<\/strong><\/span> (<em>0.5% lidocaine<\/em>). Used in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ophthalmology<\/span> (<em>tonometry, removal of foreign bodies<\/em>) and in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">otorhinolaryngology<\/span> (<em>paracentesis and indirect laryngoscopy<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Infiltration anaesthesia<\/strong><\/span> involves infiltration of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">skin<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">subcutis<\/span>, surrounding the tumour or edges of a wound with a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>local-acting anaesthetic<\/strong><\/span>. The technique is described in the section &#8220;<em>Skills<\/em>.&#8221; Used in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">debridement<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">minor surgical interventions<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Guided anaesthesia<\/strong><\/span> involves distally guided anaesthesia using the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Oberst technique<\/strong><\/span>. A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">nerve sheath<\/span> is selectively infiltrated with a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>local-acting anaesthetic<\/strong><\/span> so that the area for which this sensory nerve is responsible becomes <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>numb<\/strong><\/span>. Feeling is lost from the base to the tip.
