With a thumb, palpate the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>lower thoracic<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>lumbar spinous processes<\/strong><\/span>. Conclude whether a prominent spinous process is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">present<\/span> in the lumbar region (<em>irregular alignment palpable<\/em>)<em><strong> [Figure 59]<\/strong> (see palpation with patient in prone position)<\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; color: #003366;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-701\" style=\"margin: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Spine_sp-fig-60.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Spine_sp-fig-60.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Spine_sp-fig-60-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><strong><span style=\"width: 400px; display: block;\">Figure 59<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Interpretation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">A <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>prominent spinous process<\/strong><\/span> (<em>often at the L5 level<\/em>) may indicate <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>slipping<\/strong><\/span> of the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>matching vertebra<\/strong><\/span> (<em>spondylolisthesis<\/em>). This leads to the spinous process, located <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cranially<\/span> from the prominent spinous processes, to lie in a relatively <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>ventral position<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Recent evidence based research shows that the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>sensitivity<\/strong><\/span> and\/or <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>specificity<\/strong><\/span> of many classic specific tests is limited. A dependable diagnosis can rarely be made or discarded exclusively based on a specific test. An in-depth <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">medical history<\/span>, combined with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">physical examination<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">laboratory\/radiographic examination<\/span>, is always necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Specific tests will continue to be incorporated in the physical-diagnostic examination considering\u00a0 the following reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Practically:<\/strong> They are still being practiced in various medical centres.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Didactically:<\/strong> They may help in giving more insight into the pathology being <\/span><span style=\"color: #003366;\">examined.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Necessity:<\/strong> In areas where sophisticated diagnostic techniques are not available.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These tests are indicated with lower back complaints and\/or exaggerated lordosis and\/or sacral kyphosis.
