Any difference in leg length should, prior to this test, be corrected using planks until the pelvis is positioned straight <em>(see Tests when suspecting a difference in leg length)<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Allow the patient to bend over slowly, with the arms hanging and both palms loosely against each other (stoop test). Observe, at eye level, whether both torso halves are moving symmetrically and at the same height [Figure 47].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-683\" style=\"margin: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Spine_47_MG_2519.jpg\" alt=\"47_MG_2519\" width=\"400\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Spine_47_MG_2519.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Spine_47_MG_2519-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><span style=\"width: 400px; display: block;\">Figure 47<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Interpretation<\/h3>\n<p>If an asymmetric bulging to the back develops in the rib and\/or waist region, then this is called a gibbus.<br \/>\nIn such a case determine the localisation and how extensive it is. The presence of a gibbus indicates structural or non-functional scoliosis.<br \/>\n<em>NB. With structural scoliosis, the spinous processes rotate in the direction of the concavity and thereby it seems upon inspection and palpation with the patient standing up, that the scoliosis appears less severe than it is.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><br \/>\nIs there a case of \u2018equilibration\u2019?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/124535317?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Procedure<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The patient stands with their back towards you, during which the pelvis is straight.<\/li>\n<li>Localise the spinous process of C7 during light, active flexion of the neck and from this point drop the plumb line in a caudal direction, past the natal cleft [Figure 48]<\/li>\n<li>Observe whether C7 and the natal cleft are in vertebral alignment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-685\" style=\"margin: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Spine_48_MG_2521.jpg\" alt=\"48_MG_2521\" width=\"400\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Spine_48_MG_2521.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Spine_48_MG_2521-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><span style=\"width: 400px; display: block;\">Figure 48<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Interpretation<\/h3>\n<p>Disequilibrated scoliosis means that the plumb line from C7 falls to the right or left of the natal cleft; this is expressed to the nearest half cm.<br \/>\nIn other words, the primary curve of the spine as a result of scoliosis is insufficiently compensated by a secondary curve. In an adult patient, strongly disequilibrated scoliosis can, in combination with other factors, be cause for surgery.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Does the scoliosis disappear when seated?
