{"id":665,"date":"2010-12-02T15:26:51","date_gmt":"2010-12-02T15:26:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/muscle-tests\/"},"modified":"2023-01-11T21:24:17","modified_gmt":"2023-01-11T21:24:17","slug":"muscle-tests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/index.php\/the-examination-of-the-spine\/principles-techniques-a-procedure-for-the-exam\/muscle-tests\/","title":{"rendered":"Muscle tests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Primarily, during the examination of the back the strength of the muscles is tested, since weak muscles can have a direct influence on posture.<\/p>\n<h2>Procedure<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The position of the patient depends on the muscle(group)(s) tested.<\/li>\n<li>Always ask about pain (and its location) when muscles are tensed by a patient.<\/li>\n<li>If required, palpate during the tension of the muscles:\n<ul>\n<li>the maximum point of the pain<\/li>\n<li>the tone, for which the fingers are placed transverse to the course of the muscle fibres to gain an impression of the degree of contractility (hypo- or hypertonia)<\/li>\n<li>to differentiate between a lipoma and muscle hernia<\/li>\n<li>when an avulsion or muscle rupture is suspected<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Testing the musculature of the back<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>A.&nbsp; With patient standing upright<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp; [Figure 28]<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/124535549?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First determine the tone of the erector muscle of spine (higher lumbar) and multifidus muscle (lower lumbar) in the starting position. In the case of weak hip extensors and normal back muscles, the patient will not be able to lift the torso from the examination table but still carry out a hyperextension of the back.
