It is described in detail in <a data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3\" href=\"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/the-neurological-examination\/ne-foreword\/\">The Neurological Examination<\/a>.\u00a0The same applies for the peripheral vascular examination, <a data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"278\" href=\"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/the-cardiovascular-examination\/introduction-the-cardiovascular-examination\/cve-introduction\/\">The Cardiovascular Examination<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This section comments briefly on the examination of muscle strength. The testing of the muscle(s) for strength is mainly indicated if the patient complains about <strong>loss of strength<\/strong> and\/or if upon inspection <strong>visible atrophy<\/strong> is observed. This atrophy can be objectified by measuring <strong>muscle circumference<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the examination of the muscle strength, the patient tenses the muscle as powerfully as possible and the examiner tries to force an opposite movement (<em>e.g. <strong>testing the strength of the psoas major muscle:<\/strong> the patient tries to bring the hip and knee into maximum flexion and maintain this position while the examiner tries to extend the hip<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Intra-individual differences in the muscle strength of comparable muscles or groups of muscles are investigated by means of left\/right comparison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A scale of 0 to 5 is used to indicate the strength:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>0<\/strong> = No movement possible, no tension of the muscle can be felt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1<\/strong> = The muscle is tensed (visible contraction), however there is no movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2<\/strong> = In the case of no gravity or reduced gravity (e.g. in water), the patient is able to make a movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3<\/strong> = The patient is able to overcome gravity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4<\/strong> = The resistance applied by the patient is less than the examiner would expect in view of the patient\u2019s posture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5<\/strong> = The resistance applied by the patient is normal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Neurological examination falls outside the scope of this theme.
