A full bladder makes the examination less reliable and uncomfortable for the woman.<\/li>\n<li>Pay attention to the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">skin<\/span>. This can exhibit <strong>old<\/strong> (<em>shiny white<\/em>) and <strong>fresh<\/strong> (<em>purple<\/em>) <strong>striae<\/strong>. Sometimes <em>spider naevi<\/em> are observed. During pregnancy, these findings are physiological. Oedema of the abdominal skin is sometimes easier to see than to feel.<\/li>\n<li>Note the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">shape<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">curvature<\/span> of the abdomen:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Primigravida:<\/strong> Ovoid.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multigravida:<\/strong> Rounder, filling sides. If the transverse measurement of the abdomen is greater than the longitudinal measurement, then a transverse presentation is indicated. If the uterus is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">too large<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">convex<\/span>, then this may indicate a pregnancy <em>large for gestational age<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Palpation<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The examination is performed while standing to the right of the supine woman. Make sure your hands are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">warm<\/span> to avoid unnecessary stimulation of the abdominal muscles and always palpate with the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">flat of the hand<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Procedure<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Using both hands, palpate the periphery of the uterus and feel the tension in the uterine wall. Non-painful pregnancy contractions (<em>Braxton Hicks<\/em>) give rise to a transient increase in muscle tension and are physiological.<\/li>\n<li>Note any <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">irregularities<\/span> in the uterine surface or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">swellings<\/span> adjacent to the uterus.<\/li>\n<li>If palpating the uterus proves too difficult, then efforts can be made to determine the size of the uterus by means of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">percussion<\/span>.
