{"id":17,"date":"2010-06-09T09:53:45","date_gmt":"2010-06-09T08:53:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/motor-function\/"},"modified":"2023-01-12T00:18:46","modified_gmt":"2023-01-12T00:18:46","slug":"motor-function","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/index.php\/the-neurological-examination\/motor-function\/motor-function\/","title":{"rendered":"Motor function"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Introduction<\/strong><br \/>\nLoss of conduction or impaired conduction to a muscle, and\/or conditions involving the muscle itself can lead to loss of strength in that muscle and, ultimately to, atrophy.<br \/>\nA defect in the extrapyramidal system usually leads to an increase in muscle tone.<br \/>\nIn addition, many random movements will occur.<\/p>\n<p>An examination of the patient\u2019s motor function should aim to answer the following questions:<\/p>\n<p>1. Is there loss of strength, and if so, to what extent?<\/p>\n<p>2. Is the cause of this loss of strength the result of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a condition involving the muscle itself or the neuromuscular junction?<\/li>\n<li>a condition involving the peripheral nerve?<\/li>\n<li>a condition involving the corticospinal tract [Figure 37]?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3. Is there any change in muscle tone?<\/p>\n<p>4. Is the patient making involuntary movements? During the &#8216;gait and posture examination&#8217;, you will already have formed an impression of the normal movement pattern, the muscle contours and any involuntary movements that may be present.
