General<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

Lay out the following materials on the instrument table or trolley:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Sponge forceps<\/strong><\/span> [Figure 11]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span>
    \nDabs away any mucus\/discharge\/blood using a gauze swab or sponge, if necessary. <\/em><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Kidney bowl<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span>
    \nCollects used instruments.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Sponges\/gauze swabs<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span>
    \nWipes away any mucus\/discharge\/blood that may impede the examination.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Cotton buds<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span>
    \nCleans small amounts of mucus\/discharge or blood.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Gloves<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span>
    \nSterile gloves are usually not essential. Normal examination gloves should suffice. Ensure the gloves fit well as folds make it harder to palpate. <\/em><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Sanitary towel<\/strong><\/span> [Figure 12]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span>
    \nFor the patient after examination, if necessary.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Conducting A Smear<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n
      \n
    • Cotton bud<\/strong><\/span> (with bottle of NaCl 0.9% aqueous solution<\/em>) or cytobrush<\/strong><\/span> with gynaecological smear spatula, or Cervix-brush\u00ae<\/strong><\/span> [Figure 13]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Glass slides with frosted end<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span>
      \nCan be written on with pencil to note patient information. Ink not to be used as this dissolves in the fixative solution.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n
    • Fixative spray<\/strong><\/span>\/ether-alcohol<\/strong><\/span> for fixation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Examination Of Vaginal Discharge<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n
        \n
      • In order to make a microscopic slide using NaCl and KOH [Figure 14]<\/strong><\/em>:<\/span>\n
          \n
        • Slides<\/strong><\/span> and cover slips<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n
        • NaCl 0.9% solution<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n
        • KOH 10-20% solution<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
        • Spatula<\/strong><\/span>\/pipette<\/strong><\/span>\/inoculation loop<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
          \nTakes sample of the discharge from the vagina and places it onto the slide.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
