{"id":1677,"date":"2010-12-10T13:35:42","date_gmt":"2010-12-10T13:35:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/lubricants\/"},"modified":"2023-09-13T09:38:09","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T08:38:09","slug":"lubricants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/index.php\/the-gynaecological-examination\/conditions-and-requirements-for-the-examination\/lubricants\/","title":{"rendered":"Lubricants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">When you carry out a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>speculum examination<\/strong><\/span> or a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>bimanual examination<\/strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">,<\/span><\/span> it may be necessary to use a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">lubricant<\/span>. Sometimes, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">water<\/span> may suffice. However, it is necessary to use a proper lubricant if the vaginal walls are <em>too dry<\/em>. This can be the case in <em>postmenopausal<\/em> women and in <em>breastfeeding<\/em> mothers. What you opt for is dependant on the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">situation<\/span>, the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">indication<\/span> for the examination, the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">composition<\/span> of the lubricant and your own <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">preference<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Water<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The advantage of water is that it&#8217;s a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">neutral lubricant,<\/span> which does not lead to irritation and is readily available. In addition, warm water can be used to slightly <em>pre-warm<\/em> the speculum. A speculum can become hot quite rapidly, but a cold speculum adjusts to the body temperature. The disadvantage is that it has a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>limited<\/strong><\/span> lubricating potential, which is often insufficient in <em>postmenopausal<\/em> women.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Hibitane\u00ae (<em>cream<\/em>)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Hibitane is a <em>white<\/em>, <em>mildly disinfecting<\/em> liquid. Hibitane has good lubricating characteristics, but it can cause <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">irritation<\/span> or a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">stinging sensation<\/span> when used. It cannot be used when performing a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>smear<\/strong><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>taking a sample<\/strong><\/span> for a vaginal culture because it may influence the outcome. Hibitane is a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">white liquid<\/span> and can therefore, make the assessment of vaginal discharge more difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Neutral Lubricant (<em>Lubricare\u00ae or Ky-jelly\u00ae<\/em>)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">This lubricant is fairly <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">viscous<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">sticky<\/span>, but has good lubricating characteristics <em><strong>[Figure 9]<\/strong><\/em>. It is transparent and rarely causes the patient any irritation. If performing a smear or a vaginal culture, check if it&#8217;s possible with this type of lubricant, to ensure that it will not affect results. It can be applied hygienically from a tube.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; color: #003366;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1675\" style=\"margin: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Gynaecological_gy-fig-9.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Gynaecological_gy-fig-9.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Gynaecological_gy-fig-9-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><span style=\"width: 400px; display: block;\">Figure 9<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Oil<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Oil is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">transparent<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fairly sticky<\/span> <em><strong>[<\/strong><strong>Figure 10]<\/strong><\/em>. It rarely causes irritation and performs quite well as a lubricant. You apply sweet oil by dipping the tip of the speculum in it, allowing excess oil to drip off. This method of application and the fact the sweet oil is stored in an open container, makes it less hygienic. The latter can be counteracted by regularly replacing the content of the container.
