Conversely, simultaneous palpation can lead to a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">loss of consciousness<\/span> due to the circulation being cut off to the brain, or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">bradycardia<\/span> (<em>low pulse rate<\/em>) due to <em>vagus stimulation<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #003366; text-decoration: underline;\">Assess:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Pulse rate<\/strong> <\/span>(<em>count for a period of 15 seconds or 30 seconds in the event of a high frequency\/irregular heartbeat<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Regularity<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Amplitude of the pulse wave<\/strong><\/span> (<em>intensity<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Upstroke<\/strong><\/span> (<em>rate at which pulse wave rises<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Presence of thrills<\/strong><\/span> (<em>aortic stenosis<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #003366; text-decoration: underline;\">Examples Of Abnormal Pulse Forms:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Pulsus Tardus:<\/strong><\/span> Pulse wave with slow upstroke (<em>aortic stenosis<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Pulsus Parvus:<\/strong><\/span> Pulse wave with low amplitude as a consequence of a low stroke volume (<em>heart failure or aortic stenosis<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Unequal Pulse:<\/strong><\/span> Pulse waves of unequal amplitude and intensity in the case of an irregular rhythm (<em>atrial fibrillation<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Alternating Pulse:<\/strong><\/span> Alternate weak and strong beats in a regular rhythm (<em>severely compromised left ventricular pump function<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Bigeminal Pulse\/Coupled Pulse:<\/strong><\/span> Alternate strong and weak beats with alternating time intervals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Paradoxical Pulse\/Coupled Pulse:<\/strong> <\/span>Considerable decrease in amplitude during inspiration. This is confirmed by measuring blood pressure: a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">systolic decrease<\/span> of (<em>more than 10 mmHg in the carotids<\/em>) and <em>more than 20 mmHg<\/em> in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">brachial artery<\/span> during inspiration. For example, in the event of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">pericardial tamponade<\/span> (<em>bleeding in the heart sac<\/em>), <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">constrictive pericarditis<\/span> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">pulmonary embolism<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Palpate the common carotid artery in the ventral region of the left and right sternocleidomastoid muscle (diagonal neck muscle).
