For the treatment of all other trauma of the eye that is not superficial, you should refer to specialist literature as it goes beyond the ophthalmological knowledge required of a general physician.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Preoperative Procedures<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">&#8211; Start by establishing to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">what degree<\/span> the patient\u2019s vision has been affected by the incident that led to a foreign object getting stuck in the patient\u2019s eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">&#8211; Ask the patient to lie down on an examination table\/bed. If preferred, the intervention can also be carried out with the patient seated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">&#8211; Stain the eye globe with <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>fluorescein<\/strong><\/span> to localise the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">correct location<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">depth<\/span> of the foreign object.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">&#8211; Put on a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">forehead loupe<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">illuminate<\/span> the eye globe with light shining on the eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">&#8211; Do not only examine the eye globe, but also the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>tarsal conjunctiva<\/strong><\/span> of the <em>lower<\/em> and <em>upper<\/em> eyelid by turning the eyelid over.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>The Removal Of The Foreign Object<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">&#8211; When it&#8217;s clear that a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>superficial foreign object<\/strong><\/span> is involved, you can remove it by using a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cotton bud<\/span> dampened with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">physiological saline solution<\/span><em><strong> [Figure 64]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; color: #003366;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1638\" style=\"margin: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-64.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-64.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-64-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><strong><span style=\"width: 400px; display: block;\">Figure 64<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">&#8211; If required, you can subsequently <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">rinse<\/span> the eye globe with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">physiological saline solution<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">&#8211; Inspect the eye globe <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">once more<\/span> and note any <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">damage<\/span> to the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>conjunctiva<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>sclera<\/strong><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>cornea<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">&#8211; If damage is noticed, the patient can be referred to an <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>ophthalmology clinic<\/strong><\/span>. If not, proceed by applying <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>antibiotic cream<\/strong><\/span> to the eye (<em>same technique as for eye drops<\/em>) and cover the eye with an <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>eye dressing<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Applying An Eye Dressing<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Various \u2018<em>made to measure<\/em>\u2019 types of eye bandaging are commercially available. Some are equipped with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">sticky plaster strips<\/span> to allow <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>direct application<\/strong><\/span> <em><strong>[Figures 65, 66]<\/strong><\/em>. If they are not, take three pieces of (<em>hypoallergenic<\/em>) <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>plaster tape<\/strong><\/span> of sufficient length. Apply two of these in a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>V-shape<\/strong> <\/span>across the <em>upper<\/em> and <em>lower<\/em> edge of the eye dressing. Apply them so the plaster crosses at the temple.
