At the age of 6 months, this is not always the case. In addition, the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>cooperation<\/strong><\/span> of the child is often not too forthcoming, which may result in an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">unreliable<\/span> examination. However, <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>binocular vision<\/strong><\/span> can be examined at this age.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Use a toy when conducting item 6 of the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Van Wiechen test<\/strong><\/span>. If the child has binocular vision, they will make a targeted attempt to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">grab<\/span> the toy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">A more reliable method is the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>prism fusion test<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>Place the child on the examination table with their back resting against the chest of the guardian.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>Shine the fixation light and as soon as the child fixates, move the prism down in front of one eye, with the base of the prism pointing away from the nose. Because of the effect of the prism, the light beam will be refracted from the fixation light into the temporal direction, and reach the temporal retina of the eye that is positioned behind the eye. This causes double vision.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em> As a result, a fixation movement will occur into the nasal direction by the eye that is situated behind the prism.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>Repeat the procedure for the other eye.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em><strong>Findings<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">By moving the image on the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>retina<\/strong><\/span>, the eye will make a fixation movement behind the prism in the nasal direction, moving the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>central fovea<\/strong><\/span> in the temporal direction. The other will temporarily move in a temporal direction. <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Hering\u2019s law:<\/strong><\/span> if one eye moves over a certain distance, then the other eye will also move over the same distance, in the same direction. Because double vision is not cancelled out, it will move back to the mid-position.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Test normal, binocular vision present:<\/strong> The eye behind the prism will make a fixation movement in the nasal direction and the other eye will return to the mid-position following the conjugated movement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Test abnormal, eye behind prism is suppressed:<\/strong> The eye behind the prism does nothing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Test abnormal, eye behind prism is dominant:<\/strong> The other eye will move in the temporal direction, but does not return to the mid-position.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Examination From The Age Of 9 Months<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Binocular vision can be examined at this age using the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>prism fusion test<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">It is also possible to use <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Lang\u2019s stereoscopic test<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>If the child wears corrective glasses, they will have to use them during the examination.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>Offer the child the cards whilst they are positioned completely vertically and parallel to the frontal plane, at eye level and at reading distance. <\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em> This is best achieved when the child is positioned in front of you on the examination table, facing backwards, allowing you to look over the child\u2019s head. With this set-up, you cannot see the child\u2019s eyes but you can check whether the chart is held in the correct manner.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em> Ask the child to point out the images and observe if the child tries to grasp them in the air in front of them, or scratch them directly on the cards.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em><strong>Findings<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If the child has <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>depth perception<\/strong><\/span>, they will touch the toy illustrations directly on the cards. If there is a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">lack<\/span> of depth perception, the child will <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>randomly touch<\/strong><\/span> the cards or <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>be distracted<\/strong><\/span> by other things. Children who are able to speak, will be able to correctly point out the images when requested.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/123324477?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"384\" height=\"288\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Examination From The Age Of 4 Years<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">At this age, it is still possible to examine depth perception using the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Lang chart<\/strong><\/span> <em><strong>[Figure 51]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; color: #003366;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1624\" style=\"margin: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-51.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-51.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-51-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><strong><span style=\"width: 400px; display: block;\">Figure 51<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">From the age of <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>4 years and older<\/strong><\/span>, the use of the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>TNO stereo test<\/strong><\/span> is more commonly used. It is the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">most difficult<\/span>, yet <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">most reliable<\/span> test for depth perception. The <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>housefly test<\/strong><\/span> can also be used.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/123324454?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"384\" height=\"288\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em><strong>TNO Depth Perception Test<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The child must put on <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>red-green glasses<\/strong><\/span> and point out the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>figures<\/strong><\/span> on the cards, or indicate where the cake slice has disappeared <em><strong>[Figure 52]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; color: #003366;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1625\" style=\"margin: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-52.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-52.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-52-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><span style=\"width: 400px; display: block;\">Figure 52<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If the child wears corrective glasses, they should be placed behind the red-green glasses. A <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>non-corrected left-right difference<\/strong> <\/span>may influence the test results.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em><strong>The Housefly Test<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The child must wear <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>polaroid glasses<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Groups of <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>four circles<\/strong><\/span> (<em>most sensitive part of the housefly test<\/em>), <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>animals<\/strong><\/span> (<em>less sensitive<\/em>) and a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>large fly<\/strong><\/span> (<em>least sensitive<\/em>) are depicted on the card.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Ask the child to grab the wings of the fly (<em>these appear to stick out of the plane of the card<\/em>), to indicate which animal is stepping away from the card, or which circle is hovering above the card in each of the groups of four circles.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">One disadvantage of this test is that even <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">without<\/span> polaroid glasses, it is visible which circle or animal jumps out (<em>when the card is viewed from an angle<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The examination of binocular vision provides important information about the presence, or not, of amblyopia.
