This will also be the case if the patient has undiagnosed <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>astigmatism<\/strong><\/span>. In order to distinguish between the two disorders, ask the patient to fixate on the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">edge<\/span> of the chart. The grid pattern is now located in the peripheral visual field. In the case of a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>central visual field defect<\/strong><\/span>, the patient will see the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">line pattern<\/span> as being in focus. The lines will remain <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">blurred<\/span> if the patient has <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>astigmatism<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Peripheral And Central Scotoma<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em><strong>Peripheral Scotoma<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">A defect that is localised in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">peripheral part<\/span> of the visual field is referred to as a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>peripheral scotoma<\/strong><\/span>. Patients find this an inconvenience particularly when driving. The cause of the defect lies in the peripheral retina, the nerve fibres that conduct information from this part of the retina or the corresponding part of the visual cerebral cortex.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em><strong>Central Scotoma<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The defect lies in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">central part<\/span> of the visual field. Patients with this symptom often have problems reading or carrying out other activities that require focusing. <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Colour vision<\/strong><\/span> is generally also affected. The cause of the defect lies in the macula lutea, the nerve fibres that conduct information from this part of the retina or the corresponding part of the visual cerebral cortex.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">By using specific examination and a perimeter chart, the diagnosed defect can be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mapped<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">identified<\/span>. Examinations carried out with the confrontation method, can only give an approximation of the defect.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" class=\"mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left:
