{"id":1576,"date":"2010-12-06T12:32:17","date_gmt":"2010-12-06T12:32:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/examination-distance-vision\/"},"modified":"2023-10-23T17:05:44","modified_gmt":"2023-10-23T16:05:44","slug":"examination-distance-vision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/index.php\/the-examination-of-the-eyes-and-vision\/vision-and-colour-vision\/examination-distance-vision\/","title":{"rendered":"Examination: Distance Vision"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/123324230?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Procedure<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Allow the patient to position themselves at the distance indicated on the chart (<em>usually 5m<\/em>). <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Depending on the indication for the examination, the patient is either allowed to keep their glasses on (<em>monitoring if the correction is still satisfactory<\/em>) or to take them off. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Provide the patient with a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cover patch<\/span> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cover spoon<\/span>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">It is sensible to always start with the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">same eye<\/span> to avoid confusion when making notes about the patient\u2019s vision [<em><strong>Figures 8, 9]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; color: #003366;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1572\" style=\"margin: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-8.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-8-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><strong><span style=\"width: 400px; display: block;\">Figure 8<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; color: #003366;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1573\" style=\"margin: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-9.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-9-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><strong><span style=\"width: 400px; display: block;\">Figure 9<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Using the pointer, indicate the first line from the side and ask the patient if they can see the depicted symbols <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">sharply<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Clearly define in what direction the E symbols are pointed, or on which side the opening of the C is positioned. If the patient can see everything clearly and sharply, proceed to the next line. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Repeat this procedure until the patient <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">hesitates<\/span> when answering or indicates that they <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cannot see<\/span> the symbols sharply anymore.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Point at various symbols one by one on a particular line. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Hold the pointer underneath the middle of the individual symbol. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Particularly with the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Landolt visual acuity chart<\/strong><\/span>, it is important not to cover the opening with the pointer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"> The patient should quickly name the symbol, indicate the position of the E, or say where the opening in the C is. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">This should be done correctly for <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>two-thirds<\/strong><\/span> of the indicated symbols. If this happens without delay or hesitation, one can assume that the patient is still capable of reading this line. If this is not the case, repeat this procedure for the line above, even if the patient indicated seeing this line without problems. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If the patient is capable of correctly naming two-thirds of the indicated symbols, continue once again with the next smaller line on the visual acuity chart. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Stop when the patient is no longer capable of naming the required number of symbols <em><strong>[Figure 10]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; color: #003366;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1574\" style=\"margin: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-10.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-10-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><strong><span style=\"width: 400px; display: block;\">Figure 10<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The vision of the patient equals the number corresponding to the line of which 2\/3 of the symbols were named correctly.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If a patient cannot see the symbols of the first line properly, vision is determined by means of <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>counting fingers<\/strong><\/span>. Someone with vision 1 is capable of counting fingers against a white background from a distance of 60m (= D) <em><strong>[Figure 11]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Stand 5m from the patient and allow them to count the number of fingers that you hold up in front of a white background. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If the patient does not succeed, stand 1m <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">closer<\/span> to them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Hold your fingers both horizontally and vertically.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">In this case, vision is equal to the distance (<em>d<\/em>) between the physician and the patient, at which the patient was capable of counting the number of fingers held up, divided by D. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">In this example, it is <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>d\/60<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; color: #003366;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1575\" style=\"margin: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-11.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EyeVision_ey-fig-11-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><strong><span style=\"width: 400px; display: block;\">Figure 11<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If the patient is not capable of correctly counting your fingers at a distance of 1m, the distance at which the patient can observe hand movements is investigated. A person with vision 1 is capable of registering hand movements at a distance (<em>D<\/em>) of 300 m.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Start at a distance of 5m from the patient and repeat the steps 1m closer up, until the distance (<em>d<\/em>) is reached, at which the patient observes your hand movements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The patient\u2019s vision is again d\/D, and in this case, it is <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>d\/300<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The patient\u2019s vision is noted as follows:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Vision oculus dexter (<em>right eye<\/em>) VOD = &#8230;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Vision of the left eye is recorded in an identical manner, where D for dexter is substituted by S for sinister (<em>i.e. VOS = &#8230;<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If the examination was carried out without the patient wearing any corrective glasses or lenses, then <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>sc<\/strong><\/span> is added (<em>sine correctione<\/em>).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366;\">The notation is therefore: VODsc = &#8230;\u00a0\u00a0 \/\u00a0\u00a0 VOSsc = \u2026<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If the examination was conducted with correction, the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>sc<\/strong><\/span> is substituted by <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>cc<\/strong><\/span> (<em>cum correctione<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">In an ophthalmologic clinic, it is standard practice to add to the note on vision the number of correctly named symbols on the line following the last completed line on the chart.
