Palpation"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Required Instrument<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Head light.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Examination Technique<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">For all examinations of the nose, the patient sits on a chair which provides adequate back support. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Sit on a height-adjustable stool beside or in front of the patient. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Your eyes should be at the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">same height<\/span> as the patient\u2019s nose.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/122523012?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Procedure<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Ask the patient to hold their head up straight and aim the light of the examination lamp or head light onto the patient\u2019s nose.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Describe the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">colour<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">smoothness<\/span> of the covering skin. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Assess the position of the nose and look for any visible <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">swellings<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Ask the patient to hold the head slightly backwards so that the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>nostrils<\/strong><\/span> and the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>columella<\/strong><\/span> become visible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Check whether the nasal columella is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">straight<\/span>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Press the tip of the nose slightly upwards with your thumb <em><strong>[Figure 22]<\/strong><\/em>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The frontal part of the nasal <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>vestibulum<\/strong><\/span> will now become visible.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; display: block;\">Figure 22<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Check if there is any <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">pus<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mucus<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">blood<\/span> or possibly a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">foreign object<\/span> visible in the nose. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">In this position, occasionally the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>inferior turbinate<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>nasal cavity<\/strong><\/span> will be visible. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Assess the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">colour<\/span> and any <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">swelling<\/span> of the turbinate mucosa and accessibility of the nasal cavity. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Again, check for the presence of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">pus<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mucus<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">blood<\/span>, or a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">foreign object<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Take hold of the nasal bone between thumb and index finger <em><strong>[Figure 23]<\/strong><\/em> and move the covering skin carefully over the bony part of the nasal skeleton. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Note any <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">swellings<\/span> and other <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">irregularities<\/span> on the surface that may indicate recent or old damage to the nasal bone. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Ask the patient whether this is painful. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Whilst feeling the nose with your fingers in this manner, palpate towards the nasal tip. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">For any <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">swellings<\/span> that you may come across, describe the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">size<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">perimeters<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">surface<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">consistency<\/span>, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mobility<\/span> in relation to the surrounding structures.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; display: block;\">Figure 23<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Finally, assess the accessibility of the nose. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">To do this, first close off one nostril and then the other by placing a finger on the underside of the nostril <em><strong>[<\/strong><strong>Figure 24]<\/strong><\/em>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Make sure to wear a glove. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Then ask the patient to inhale and exhale through the opened nostril.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block;
