fullscreen; picture-in-picture\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Procedure<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Prior to carrying out the test, tell the patient what they will have to do. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">In this case, they must indicate when they cease to hear the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>tuning fork<\/strong><\/span> that you have placed firmly against their <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>mastoid process<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Furthermore, the patient should tell you when they can hear the tuning fork again when you hold it in front of the ear.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Make the tuning fork <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">vibrate<\/span> as for Weber\u2019s test.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Place the base of the tuning fork firmly onto the patient\u2019s mastoid process <\/span><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em><strong>[Figure 17]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; display: block;\">Figure 17<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">When the patient indicates that they are no longer able to hear the tuning fork, hold it in front of the patient\u2019s ear. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Make sure that you hold the tuning fork so that both legs are vibrating in front of the external auditory meatus (<em>imagine that the legs are covered by a stick and hold the middle of the tip of this imaginary stick in front of the auditory meatus<\/em>) <em><strong>[Figure 18]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; display: block;\">Figure 18<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Repeat the test for the other ear.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Rinne\u2019s tuning fork test<\/strong><\/span> can also be carried out as a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>shortened version<\/strong><\/span>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">For this, you first hold the tuning fork, as described above, in front of the patient\u2019s ear before immediately placing it on the patient\u2019s mastoid process. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Ask the patient whether they can hear the humming of the tuning fork more loudly when the tuning fork is behind the ear, against the mastoid process, or in front of the ear. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Repeat the test for the other ear.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"mediaserver\/ent\/ent-4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-681\" style=\"border-width: 0px; border-style: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/web-video-icon-400p.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"50\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/web-video-icon-400p.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/web-video-icon-400p-300x38.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Interpretation Of The Findings<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If the patient indicates hearing the tuning fork again when you hold it in front of their ear, or if it becomes louder in front of the ear compared to the mastoid process in the shortened version of Rinne\u2019s test, it indicates either <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">normal hearing<\/span> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">sensorineural hearing loss<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If the patient claims not to hear the tuning fork in front of the ear, or indicates hearing it as a softer tone in the shortened version of the tuning fork test, it suggests <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">conductive hearing loss<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Requirements 512 Hz tuning fork [Figure 11].
